Iraola lays down the stern challenge to Liverpool stars ahead of Forest duel
By Luke Oluoch, August 29, 2026Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has demanded that the Reds must exhibit desire, energy, and commitment on the pitch as they prepare to kickstart their 2026 league run at home against Nottingham Forest.
Speaking while previewing their 2:30 pm kickoff against Forest on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the new boss noted that players have a role in earning a connection with the fans. He added that this will only be achieved when supporters see and believe their players are fighting and doing what is demanded of them on the pitch.
Connection with fans
“One of our goals is to get this connection with the fans. I always tell the players, “The fans have to feel that if they were in your position, they would do exactly the same as you are doing,” he said.
Iraola’s side are seeking a winning start to their 2026–27 home matches and aiming to gain their first three points of the campaign, having drawn 2-2 away at Newcastle United on the opening weekend.
Endeavour to deliver
The new gaffer seemed mindful of the emotion that has defined Liverpool games in the past—such as during the Jürgen Klopp era, and while demanding a return to that atmosphere, laid down what players must do to ensure fans know they are endeavouring to deliver on the pitch.
“The fans probably cannot put a free-kick into the top corner. But they are thinking: ‘If I were there, I would give everything—I will follow every ball, I will attack the spaces, I will press, I will head the ball, and I will win the second balls,” Iraola explained.
“We have to do all those basics well. When the fans feel this and see that they are trying and giving everything, it keeps the team closer to the fans.”
Reds out to join Man City on winning ways
He further acknowledged that when fan support is earned via physical commitment, the stadium atmosphere will naturally lift the team’s level of play.
“When you create this connection, we are going to be much, much better. We have to do our part—because I’m sure if we do our part, the other side will be there,” he concluded.
The Reds’ first Anfield clash will be the second match of Matchday 2 after Manchester City made it two wins in two after Friday’s comfortable 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.
The 2025 league champions escaped with a point after a late penalty helped them draw Newcastle in their opener at St. James Park a week ago.
