Hürzeler breaks down tactical master plan behind Brighton’s dominance against Arsenal

The German gaffer orchestrated a first league defeat against the reigning champions this term and the Gunners’ first since they lost to Man City last season.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the Saturday, September 19, 2026 clash at the Amex Stadium, Hürzeler hailed a well-executed tactical masterclass:

“Beating the current champions and the best team in England is something special. But it is not because the result is special, it is the performance. The boys showed real togetherness and intensity.
“They were horrible to play against today and that’s because we did the basic things right. Overall I was very pleased with the performance.
“I think we deserved to win. It’s a moment the players and the staff can enjoy because they worked hard for this, but it’s also important why we had this success today, because we did the basics right and we were brilliant in the duels,” he explained.
His remarks come after Premier League pundit and former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott opined that the defeat might be instrumental in helping league opponents pinpoint Arsenal weak points.
Speaking after the game, Walcott added that Brighton’s display had all the hallmarks of the secret code:

“The messages Mikel Arteta would have given his squad before the game would have been the same; this might show the blueprint of how to beat Arsenal: be aggressive, be good on the ball, and be patient.”
The former winger, however, said the timing of the defeat, alluding to the international break it precedes, as a positive aspect for the team as they look to reset.
The loss means Arsenal will now have to regroup ahead of the league return after the international games.
“Brighton are playing with so much confidence, and Arsenal looked a bit shell-shocked. It’s like they went backwards today; now they have got a long period for the international break, and that might be a good thing,” he revealed.
Arsenal will next be back in action after the international calendar with a clash against Leeds United on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
