De Zerbi eager for more attacking reinforcements as Spurs continue squad rebuild
By Joel Masibo, July 25, 2026Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has revealed the club is still searching for additional firepower despite an already busy summer in the transfer market.
The North London side has invested £237 million on six arrivals, including a club-record £100 million move for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Spurs have also spent £85 million (Ksh15 billion) to bring in Mateus Fernandes and £52 million on Jan Paul van Hecke, while Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka arrived as free agents.
However, De Zerbi believes the squad still requires fresh options in the final third before the transfer window closes.
“The target now is to complete the attacking positions,” he said.
“We want the first target, the first level, because anyway we are already important players, but I think to start the new project we need another couple of important players, for sure.”
The Italian coach stressed that Tottenham’s recruitment work is far from over.
“It’s not finished yet, our transfer market window. We have to finish, we have to bring another couple of, maybe more, maybe not less, but a couple of players.”
Inter monitoring Romero situation
Meanwhile, Inter Milan are reportedly considering a move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.
According to Sky in Italy, the Serie A champions have identified the Argentina international as one of their preferred centre-back targets alongside John Stones. Any move for Romero is expected to be difficult financially, although Spurs are believed to be open to negotiations if a suitable offer is submitted. The defender remains under contract until 2029.
Inter are also looking to strengthen at full-back and have previously shown interest in Djed Spence. While that pursuit has cooled in recent weeks, the Tottenham defender remains on their shortlist together with Monaco’s Vanderson and Feyenoord’s Givairo Read.
De Zerbi prepared to resolve Bergvall’s future
De Zerbi has also addressed uncertainty surrounding Lucas Bergvall, confirming he has yet to hold talks with the Swedish midfielder but intends to do so soon.
Sky Sports News understands Bergvall is keen to leave this summer, with Nottingham Forest continuing their pursuit and Newcastle also discussing potential financial terms with Spurs.
Although Tottenham insiders insist they would prefer to keep the 20-year-old, De Zerbi said he only wants players fully committed to the club.
“I have not spoken with Lucas yet. I will in the next days and we will make the best decision for the club, for Lucas, for me, for every one of us, without problems, Lucas is a big, big talent.
“There will be a big competition to play because at the end, I think we will be two players for each position. If he wants to stay, I will be happy. Otherwise, we have to find a new solution with Johan Lange, with Vinai. It’s not my business after the decision to leave.”
Kudus nearing return from injury
De Zerbi also provided encouraging news on Mohammed Kudus, who has been sidelined since January with a muscle injury.
“Kudus is very close,” De Zerbi said. “I think when we come back to London he will be available to start working with us. It’s a great thing for us. Kudus is another important player.”
The Spurs boss also updated supporters on Guglielmo Vicario and Dejan Kulusevski.
“Vicario is injured, not a big injury, but he needs to stay one week in London,” he explained.
Regarding Kulusevski, De Zerbi added: “Kulusevski, we have to see in the next couple of weeks. He’s another important player. After one season, one complete season, without a game, we have to analyse better and better, don’t take risks, first of all for him and then for us.”
