Chelsea sign defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta
By Joel Masibo, July 1, 2026Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of Italy international Marco Palestra from Serie A side Atalanta, adding one of the country’s most highly rated young defenders to their squad.
The 21-year-old has committed his future to the Blues by signing a deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033. He is expected to report for pre-season training under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

Palestra joins Chelsea after an outstanding campaign that saw him named Serie A Defender of the Year, further enhancing his growing reputation across European football.
Speaking after completing the transfer, the defender explained why he chose to make the move to west London.
“A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world. I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager,” he said.
Squad depth
“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League,” he added.
Palestra heads to England following a productive loan spell with Cagliari during the 2025/26 season, where he established himself as one of the standout defenders in Italy’s top division.

He made 37 Serie A appearances for the club, impressing with his ability to operate as both a full-back and wing-back on either side of the pitch.
His consistent performances also earned him international recognition, making his senior debut for Italy earlier this year before quickly collecting a second appearance for the Azzurri.
Chelsea will now hope the versatile defender can carry that form into the Premier League as he begins the next chapter of his career in blue.
