Bruno Guimaraes nears Arsenal move from Newcastle United

The Gunners have made strengthening the centre of midfield one of their biggest priorities ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Manager Mikel Arteta has identified Guimaraes as his preferred addition and is eager to bring the Brazilian to the Emirates before the new season gets underway.
After weeks of groundwork behind the scenes, Arsenal are now intensifying efforts to complete one of the standout transfers of the summer. Although Newcastle were initially reluctant to consider selling one of their most influential players, confidence has remained high within Arsenal’s camp that an agreement could eventually be reached.
Arsenal step up negotiations
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided a ‘positive update’, revealing that discussions between the two Premier League clubs are continuing as Arsenal attempt to finalise the move.
Romano posted:
“?? Arsenal in direct talks again today with Newcastle to close Bruno Guimarães deal. Bruno, waiting for green light to travel for medical and contract signing as soon as deal is completed. #AFC maintain total confidence.”
The report indicates that Guimaraes has already settled personal terms with Arsenal and is simply waiting for approval to travel for a medical and complete the necessary paperwork.
Talks between the clubs are said to be advancing, with negotiations now focused on agreeing the final transfer fee. While no official deal has been announced, both sides are reportedly edging closer to finding common ground.
Arteta has admired the Brazilian international for a long time and believes his quality, leadership and technical ability would significantly strengthen Arsenal’s midfield options.
Newcastle preparing for another major change
If Guimaraes departs, Newcastle would lose not only one of their finest midfielders but also their club captain, creating another major challenge during an already difficult summer.
The Magpies have already seen Eddie Howe leave the club, while Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have also moved on. Losing Guimaraes would force Newcastle into another midfield rebuild as they seek suitable replacements.
On the positive side, the sizeable transfer income from the Brazilian’s sale would provide the club with valuable resources to reshape the squad.
There has also been considerable discussion surrounding Newcastle’s preference for recruiting younger players, a strategy that reportedly caused frustration for Howe before his exit and is expected to be a key issue for his likely successor, Matthias Jaissle, as preparations continue for the new season.
