Arsenal raid Man Utd, sign youngster James Scanlon

By , August 29, 2026

The player trade between Arsenal and Manchester United has come to the fore once more with the Gunners’ signing of James Scanlon, a talented 19-year-old attacker from Carrington.

Manchester United confirmed that Scanlon is set to join Arsenal’s youth setup at Hale End.

Scanlon became a first-year scholar at United in 2023. Despite his young age, the Gibraltar international boasts rare senior experience, having earned 24 caps for his country.

He made his senior debut against Lithuania in March 2024 and has since featured in World Cup qualifiers and UEFA Nations League action.

He was among the prospects expected to move on from United’s academy conveyor belt, with the Gunners making their move after tracking him for the better part of a year.

Scanlon scored a hat-trick against Sporting U19 in January 2026 before spending the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon Town, where he impressed. United activated a 50 per cent future sell-on clause to greenlight his transfer to Hale End.

Academy movement between Arsenal and Man United

Scanlon’s transfer comes amid an active period of academy trading between the two rivals:

  • Chido Obi-Martin: The Danish striker left Arsenal for Manchester United seeking a clearer developmental pathway and a faster transition into Under-21 and senior team setups.
  • Ayden Heaven: The defender made one first-team appearance for Arsenal before following Obi-Martin’s path to Old Trafford in February 2025, where he has since joined United’s senior setup.

Marli Salmon commits future

Meanwhile, Arsenal have secured the future of one of their own top talents. Promising defender Marli Salmon officially signed his first professional contract with the club on his 17th birthday on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Initially joining Arsenal as an attacker in 2019, Hale End coaches successfully converted him into a ball-playing centre-back.

After impressing throughout his time with Arsenal academy, Marli earned a spot in the Gunners’ first-team squad on several occasions last season.

One of his highlights was being included in the squad for our trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge, where he came on for Ben White in the 83rd minute to make his professional debut.
