Analysis: A look at Rashford’s future at Manchester United after Barcelona loan

The England international has not played a Premier League match for United since December 2024, having subsequently spent time away from Old Trafford on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona.
Barcelona decided against making their £26 million (Ksh455B) option to sign Rashford permanently, paving the way for the forward to return to Manchester despite a reunion appearing unlikely for much of last season.
His comeback could give manager Michael Carrick an additional solution on the left side of attack while also providing another option in a central role. Benjamin Sesko has not yet played during pre-season as he continues his recovery from injury, while Patrick Dorgu’s most effective position remains a matter of discussion.
Rashford has already established an impressive record in the Premier League, scoring 87 goals in 287 appearances. His direct style would also offer United a different attacking option to Matheus Cunha on the left.
Carrick welcomes Rashford back
United had been considering bringing in another forward during the summer transfer window, but Rashford’s return could reduce the immediate need for another attacking addition.
Carrick has confirmed that Rashford would be included as the squad reunited in Dublin for their next stage of pre-season preparations.
“We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together. Marcus is part of that,” Carrick confirmed.
The manager has a long-standing relationship with Rashford. Carrick was part of the Manchester United coaching setup under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, periods during which Rashford became an important member of the senior team.
He was also on the pitch in 2016 when an 18-year-old Rashford came off the bench against FC Midtjylland and scored twice. That familiarity could prove valuable as Carrick attempts to help the forward rediscover his best form.
Can Rashford rediscover his best level?
There is still uncertainty over whether Rashford can reproduce the form that made him one of United’s most dangerous attackers following the 2022 World Cup.
His performances subsequently declined, eventually leading to him falling out of favour under Erik ten Hag and later Ruben Amorim. His loan move to Aston Villa then provided an opportunity to restart his career away from the pressure of Old Trafford before he moved to Barcelona.
Now, however, Rashford is set to be given another opportunity at United.
He is expected to be reintegrated into the squad as the club continues its pre-season work in Dublin. Wednesday’s meeting with Leeds is likely to come too soon for him, but a return could be possible in United’s following friendly.
United are scheduled to play Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on Saturday, potentially creating an intriguing reunion between Rashford and the manager who previously oversaw his departure from Old Trafford.
Rashford faces a fresh opportunity at Old Trafford
The forward’s return is likely to attract significant attention, particularly given his difficult final period at United before his loan departures.
For Carrick, however, the situation presents an opportunity to work with a player he knows well and who has already demonstrated that he can perform at the highest level.
Rashford’s challenge will be to regain consistency, convince the new coaching staff of his value and earn back the confidence of the supporters.
If he succeeds, United could find themselves with an attacking player capable of providing goals, pace and a more direct threat from the left flank without having to spend heavily on another replacement.
