Construction of 10,000-seater Wajir stadium fast-tracked for June 1st spectacle

In a landmark move for national unity, President William Ruto has announced that Wajir County will host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations, marking the first time since Kenyan Independence that a national holiday will be commemorated in the region.
To facilitate the massive influx of dignitaries and spectators, the government has broke ground on a state-of-the-art 10,000-seater modern stadium in Wajir town.
The project, valued at Ksh900 million, is being fast-tracked to ensure completion by the June 1st deadline.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who accompanied the President for the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, February 12, 2026, described the project as a “historic milestone” that would permanently alter the sports landscape of Northern Kenya.
“The facility will not only nurture talent and stimulate the local economy but will also host the first-ever National Celebrations in Northern Kenya since Independence. This reaffirms H.E President William Ruto’s deliberate agenda of inclusion,” Mvurya stated on his official X account.

The Ksh900 million investment is part of a broader strategy to ensure balanced national growth.
For decades, Northern Kenya has lacked large-scale athletic infrastructure, a gap this modern facility aims to fill. Beyond the Madaraka Day festivities, the stadium is expected to serve as a hub for football, athletics, and cultural events.
President Ruto emphasised that the project is on a high-priority schedule.
With less than four months until Madaraka Day, contractors are expected to work around the clock to transform the site into a modern arena capable of hosting parading security forces and cultural performers.
“To further advance balanced national development, we are building a 10,000-seater modern stadium in Wajir town,” Ruto declared.

The move has been widely praised by local leaders as a powerful gesture of political and economic inclusion for a region that has often felt marginalised.
As Wajir prepares to step into the national spotlight, the Ksh900 million stadium stands as a symbol of a new Kenya – where national pride is celebrated in every corner of the Republic.
