Chelsea captain Reece James signs a new deal until 2032
By Luke Oluoch, March 13, 2026Chelsea captain Reece James has committed his future to the club by agreeing to a six-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2032.
This extension, confirmed by the West London club on Friday, March 13, 2026, underscores his reliability and importance to the club, where he has spent his entire football career, having joined the academy at age six.
New contract
“Chelsea is delighted to announce that the men’s team captain, Reece James, has signed a new contract until 2032,” part of the statement read.
As captain and a versatile talent, James excels as a right-back/defender but has increasingly featured as a holding midfielder under recent managers—including Enzo Maresca (who used him in deeper roles to manage his fitness and add tactical flexibility) and the current boss Liam Rosenior
James started his career at Chelsea and is among Cobham’s most outstanding academy graduates.

He first signed with Chelsea as a youth player at the age of six in the 2005/2006 season, having trained at their academy from that young age after starting in grassroots football.

His first professional contract came in March 2017, when he was 17 years old.
His new contract is part of Chelsea’s new incentivised wage structure, where players are subject to performance metrics for individuals and the team
Speaking after the contract extension, James shared his elation to extend his stay with the London giants.

“I am over the moon to have extended my contract—Chelsea means so much to me.
‘I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, Coach, and all the staff, and hopefully, we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years,” he said.
The 26-year-old defender has been a key player for Chelsea, making 225 appearances, scoring 16 goals, and providing 31 assists.
He has also lifted five major trophies, including the FA Cup, the 2021 Champions League in the famous win orchestrated by Tomas Tuchel against English rivals Manchester City, and the Club World Cup twice.
