Luis Enrique aims higher: PSG target third consecutive Champions League crown after Super Cup triumph

The Spanish coach insists PSG must remain ambitious as they look to extend their dominance in Europe after edging Aston Villa 2-1 to lift the Super Cup in Austria on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, although he acknowledged the difficulty of achieving such a feat. The French giants beat Arsenal to retain their crown in the 2025/26 season, after thrashing Inter Milan in the 2024/25 final.
“Our mentality will now be to try to win the third Champions League in a row. We need to be ambitious and believe we can do it. It’s going to be very difficult – we don’t want to be complacent, but it’s definitely our goal,” Luis Enrique said.
His comments underline PSG’s desire to maintain their position at the summit of European football after establishing themselves as Champions League winners in successive campaigns.
Continued improvement
Luis Enrique, however, is aware that repeating such success will require continued improvement. The coach stressed that PSG cannot afford to become comfortable despite their recent achievements.
“I know just how difficult it is to take home silverware, especially at a club with an appetite for it,” he said.
The PSG boss also reflected on the development of his squad, recalling how doubts surrounded the team when he first took charge.
“Three years ago everyone said my team was too young, and we’ve proved the opposite,” Luis Enrique added.
Rather than resting on their achievements, the Spaniard believes his players must continue addressing their weaknesses if they are to compete for another European crown.
“We need to improve quite a few things; we know what our weaknesses are, but I’m so happy to have this opportunity to coach a side with such a good mentality,” he said.
Players’ effort
Luis Enrique also praised his players for their performance under difficult circumstances, insisting that their character was crucial to overcoming a demanding contest.
“We knew prior to the game it was going to be a tough one. But we were able to play as we did because my players showed just what they’re made of,” he explained.
The coach admitted that PSG were not operating at their physical best, but said their mentality and identity once again carried them through.
“We may not be in the best physical condition, but once again it’s a real demonstration of our DNA and our fans, who have helped us to win trophies and keep standards high,” Luis Enrique said.
With another Champions League campaign now looming, PSG’s ambitions are clear. Luis Enrique wants his side to remain hungry, improve where necessary and attempt to make history by becoming three-time consecutive European champions.
