Carrick dodges question on possible Manchester United permanent job after win over Liverpool
By Luke Oluoch, May 3, 2026Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has refused to be drawn into speculation regarding whether he is the right man to lead the club permanently. Carrick has steered the side through a remarkable interim period following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
The Englishman has overseen a stunning turnaround, which culminated in securing a return to the UEFA Champions League this Sunday, May 3, 2026, after the Red Devils edged Liverpool 3-2.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the clash, Carrick admitted his focus has remained on long-term projects for the club.
Not in my control
Despite being part of the group overseeing the search for the next head coach, he insisted the final decision does not rest with him.
“You can still add a few layers in the next couple of weeks, so we will begin with that,” Carrick stated.
“It is not about what I like or what I do not like. It is not in my control. Everything has gone so well; we know the situation and where we are.”

United on right track
The club legend shared his elation as United sealed a rare season double over their North West rivals.
“I am happy with where we are at the moment, and we still want to get better. Let’s see what happens next. At this moment in time, (the permanent job) is not something I am thinking about,” he said.
Despite the success, uncertainty remains over whether Carrick will continue this summer, with managers like outgoing AFC Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola rumored to be in contention.
Reflecting on the search for a permanent successor, former United captain Roy Keane, who has been a vehement critic of Carrick’s takeover, opined that:
“I’m not sure if (Iraola) has done enough yet. I’m sure United are looking at him as his contract is up, but could I see him coming to Man Utd? Probably not,” Keane stated.
“The remit at Bournemouth is different from Manchester United. At United, you are expected to win titles. At Bournemouth, it’s about winning matches while selling players and generating revenue. There is a different pressure. He has done an amazing job, but is he an option? I don’t know.”
