Boniface Mwangi calls out Sports CS over support for Angela Okutoyi
Activist Boniface Mwangi has called out the government for failing to honour its pledge to support tennis champion Angela Okutoyi, necessitating a fundraiser.
Mwangi, who will be vying for the presidency in 2027, noted that despite committing to support Okutoyi after her emotional appeal on social media over her lack of sponsorship, the government has not offered the support promised.
Mwangi noted that at the time of the plea, Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, committed that his ministry would support her.

“In January 2026, Angella Okutoyi shared an emotional public appeal on social media about her lack of sponsorship and financial struggles as she prepared to turn fully professional. Ministry of Sports Cabinet Secretary @Waziri_Mvurya @moyasa_ke responded directly,” Mwangi wrote on X on Monday, February 9, 2026.
What the CS promised
He quoted the response received from the CS, which read:
“I have received Angella Okutoyi’s appeal and spoken to Kenya Tennis Federation leadership. We will engage the Tennis Federation of Kenya to explore immediate support options and ensure she is well-prepared and financially supported.” The government lied, and now we must step up.“
The activist decried the lack of support for Okutoyi, who he praised as Kenya’s best ever tennis player, as the sportswoman stares at the possibility of failing to achieve her dreams of joining the WTA Tour as a professional.

“Angella Okutoyi, Kenya’s best-ever female tennis player, is playing college tennis for Auburn University. This is her final year, and after graduating, she plans to join the WTA Tour as a professional,” he stated.
Appeal for support
Mwangi appealed to Kenyans to come through for Okutoyi and help her realise her dream by contributing funds after the Ministry of Sports and the CS in charge failed to support her despite publicly pledging their support.
“@Okutoyiangella2 is the reigning African champion and the 2020 Wimbledon Junior Doubles winner. She deserves our support,” he added.
An initiative to support the tennis star is currently running on M-Changa, dubbed “Angella Okutoyi: the Road to #1” to support the tennis star.

Both the Ministry of Sports and the CS were yet to issue a public statement on what became of the support promised to Okutoyi by the time this publication was made.
