Bad day in office! Ebenyo apologises profusely after dismal show in New York race

Kenyan long-distance athlete Daniel Ebenyo has conveyed his apologies after Kenya’s dismal show in the 2026 edition of the New York Half Marathon staged on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
Ebenyo led a contingent of four Kenyan athletes in the men’s category, a race that culminated in disappointing fashion with all four finishing outside the top ten.
The race honours went to South African Adriaan Wildschutt, who completed his conquest in a time of 59:30.

While acknowledging carrying the hopes of many Kenyans, Ebenyo, who recently represented Kenya’s cross-country team in Tallahassee, USA, took to his Facebook page to apologise.
Sincere apologies
“Today was not the day I hoped for. To all my fans and supporters, I sincerely want to say sorry for letting you down. It was a tough day in the office, and the cold weather made it even more challenging. But that is the true spirit of sports: some days we win, and some days we learn,” part of his statement read.
He also promised to make a strong comeback in the coming assignments.
Comeback
“Please know that every time I step on the starting line, I carry your hopes with me in my heart.
Today we lose, but tomorrow we rise again. I promise to come back stronger and roar louder next time. Thank you for standing with me through every high and low,’ he added.

The foregoing comes as Hellen Obiri extended her dominance in the women’s category by winning the 2026 half-marathon edition in breathtaking fashion, finishing ahead of compatriot Sharon Lokedi.
The former two-time NY full marathon winner put up a spirited performance to edge a star-studded field in a time of 1:06:33.
Lokedi, who has similarly enjoyed good fortune in New York, clocked 1:07:10 to seal a 1-2 finish for Kenya.
In the men’s race, Patrick Kiprop was Kenya’s brightest spot in the race, finishing the course in a time of 1:00:01.
The feat secured him a lowly eighth-place finish.
Abel Kipchumba, meanwhile, finished outside the top ten too despite entering the race as one of the clear favourite.
