Emmanuel Wanyonyi powers to victory in Zurich Diamond League
By Luke Oluoch, August 28, 2026Reigning World and Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi produced yet another champion’s display, clocking a world-leading time of 1:41.76 to claim the Zurich Diamond League race in Switzerland on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
In another thrilling 800m showdown, Wanyonyi came close to David Rudisha’s world record, unleashing a powerful kick down the home straight to win his second consecutive Diamond League race.
He held off fierce competition at the finish line, edging Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati (1:41.83), while another Algerian, Slimane Moula, rounded out the podium in 1:43.52.
Kenya’s Wycliffe Kinyamal ran a season’s best of 1:44.26, finishing sixth.
Wanyonyi’s latest triumph comes just six days after his victory in Silesia, building crucial momentum as he aims to extend his streak at the Wanda Diamond League Finals at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme on September 4–5, 2026.
He will head into the races on a high after his record-breaking feat in the 1000m race at the Monaco Diamond League on July 10, 2026, where he made history outside his traditional 800m by stepping up to the rarely contested 1000m.

Wanyonyi shattered a long-standing record of Noah Ngeny’s iconic 1000 m world record of 2:11.96, taking it down for the first time since 1999.
The Zurich leg also features strong winning performances from other Kenyan athletes.
Women’s 3000m Steeplechase: Faith Cherotich stopped the clock at 8:55.82 to win the race, leading a 1-2 finish for Kenya. US-based compatriot Doris Lemngole took second with a personal best of 8:55.94, while Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai finished third.
The win was the 21-year-old’s second Diamond League following up after she crossed the finish line in 8:51.74 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday, July 4, 2026, for her first win.
Men’s 1500m: Former World U20 champion Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech stormed to a second-place finish in 3:31.84. Koech edged American Yared Nuguse (3:31.85) in a tight finish, trailing only Olympic champion Cole Hocker (3:31.71).
