Arteta: Arsenal should have had big trophies in the last 4 years

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has claimed that his side deserved to have a few trophies to show for their efforts, pointing out that the Gunners have been among the most consistent teams in England over the last four years.

Arsenal famously finished as runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in back-to-back campaigns during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

The latter title race went down to the literal final day, with City ultimately edging out Arsenal by just two points. This came after previous second-place finishes in 2015/16 behind Leicester City, and more recently in the 2024/25 season behind champions Liverpool.

Despite the near-misses, the Spanish tactician insists that his team’s sustained dominance in recent Premier League history means their travails merit silverware.

“Looking at the last few years, especially the last four, based on our consistency and the amount of points we have accumulated, we should have a few trophies to show for it, especially in this league. But that only drives you to be better,” Arteta said in an interview with Sky Sports.

On verge of history

With Arsenal currently sitting ahead of arch-rivals Manchester City in the intense title race, the club is closer than ever to ending a two-decade-long drought.

If the Gunners win their remaining league games against Crystal Palace and Burnley, they will secure their first league title since Arsène Wenger famously guided the ‘Invincibles’ to glory in 2004.

However, domestic glory is only half of the historic script currently being written at the Emirates.

Champions League glory

Arteta’s boys are also just one match away from lifting a historic, first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy.

Arsenal will take their stellar unbeaten European run into the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday, May 30, 2026, where they are set to clash with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Budapest, Hungary.

The Arsenal boss has challenged his players to rise to the occasion and deliver a memorable finale to a season that could see them crowned double winners both at home and in Europe.

“We still have to take that final step to close the business. This is the opportunity we have worked for in these last few games, and we are looking forward to it,” Arteta added.
