Ambani calls for a player-centered approach in managing AFC Leopards

AFC Leopards Chairman Boniface Ambani has called for a player-centred approach at Ingwe, emphasising that the success of any club begins with prioritising the welfare and happiness of its players.

Speaking about leadership and team dynamics on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Ambani reiterated the importance of placing players at the heart of decision-making processes within the club.

“The boys are our bosses. Players first. I insist on players first. Then the TB. Once you make them happy, and give them everything they want, they’ll deliver,” he stated.

Changing the approach

Ambani’s remarks highlight a philosophy that shifts traditional power structures in football administration, advocating for a system where players are treated as the most valuable stakeholders. According to him, the existence of a football club is fundamentally anchored on its players.

“Without the players, there will be no club and no fans, and definitely no officials,” he added, reinforcing the idea that administrators and technical benches must work in service of the squad rather than the other way around.

The AFC Leopards chairman further urged club officials to foster a supportive and nurturing environment, where players feel valued, protected, and motivated. “So in short, allow them to be your bosses. Not the other way round. Embrace them, protect them, show them love,” Ambani advised.

Beyond structural and managerial aspects, Ambani also pointed to the importance of unity and shared values within the club’s leadership. He called for harmony, peace, and love to guide interactions among officials, noting that internal cohesion plays a critical role in achieving success on and off the pitch.

“Harmony and peace and love should be a leading factor amongst the club officials. Walk together… Above all be prayerful,” he concluded.

Fine run

Ambani’s sentiments come at a time when many Kenyan football clubs continue to grapple with financial constraints, administrative wrangles, and player welfare concerns. His player-first approach could serve as a blueprint for sustainable success.

Meanwhile, Ingwe are having a smooth run in the current Football Kenya Federation Premier campaign, placed second on the second with two points shy of leaders Gor Mahia. AFC Leopards are aiming to win their first league title that has remained elusive since 1998, with current head coach Fred Ambani being among the winning squad.
