Sports Kenya has expressed optimism over the development of the playing surface at Talanta Stadium following the third pitch inspection conducted by its technical team ahead of the fast-approaching 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (2027 AFCON) that Kenya will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

The inspection, which focused on assessing the condition and growth of the newly seeded turf, revealed encouraging signs of grass germination across the stadium’s playing field, marking another milestone in the construction of the facility earmarked for major international competitions.

According to Sports Kenya, the technical team reviewed the progress of the pitch and provided several recommendations aimed at ensuring the surface develops uniformly and meets the highest standards required for elite football competitions.

Among the key recommendations were the application of appropriate fertilizers to support healthy grass growth, enhanced weed management measures to prevent unwanted vegetation from affecting the turf, and adjustments to the irrigation system to ensure even water distribution across the field.

“The inspection noted encouraging grass germination across the pitch, with recommendations issued on fertilizer application, weed management, and irrigation system adjustments to enhance uniform growth.” Sports Kenya’s statement said on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

AFCON preparedness

Talanta Stadium is one of Kenya’s flagship sports infrastructure projects and is expected to play a significant role in the country’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in East Africa.

The stadium, also known as Raila Odinga International Stadium, is being developed to meet international football standards and is seen as a key component of the region’s readiness for the continental showpiece.

Similarly, in an update on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Sports Kenya also announced that its engineers, working alongside UNES Consultant Kennedy Otieno and Team Leader Prof. Abonyo, conducted a joint assessment, setting out and offsetting exercise for pipework at the Kasarani Main Stadium, Lower Annex, and Upper Annex ahead of AFCON 2027.

The exercise is part of ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring that the stadium facilities meet international standards ahead of the continental football showpiece. The planned irrigation system is expected to enhance pitch quality by providing efficient and consistent watering, a critical requirement for maintaining world-class playing surfaces.

Both Talanta and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi have been earmarked as Kenya’s main venues for the beckoning showpiece.
