AFC Leopards’ title chase suffers setback after Mathare humiliation

By , March 14, 2026

AFC Leopards’ dream for the FKF Premier League honours has taken yet another hit following a shocking 4-1 defeat to Mathare United on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

John Kamau’s side might be reeling from the bad memories of the Nyayo National Stadium for their trademark late implosion, but they buried all that in a dramatic final 20 minutes, mustering a valiant fightback to flip the script on Leopards in a thrilling victory.

Victor Omune struck the first blood from Ronald Sichenje’s cross to put Ingwe to a deserved lead at the hour mark.

Fred Ambani’s team, however, inexplicably lost themselves after taking the lead as Mathare United took the game to them.

Brian Ouru restored parity in the 77th minute to spark the comeback.

The Slum boys then turned the game on its head with Ouru completing his double with seven minutes left.

Isaac Omweri ensured the goal fest further with a third strike before Ian Omondi hit the final nail in the Leopards’ coffin.

The defeat now leaves Leopards in second place with a six-point cushion from leaders Gor, set to widen if the leaders win on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Ulinzi Stars.

Peter Okidi’s Shabana, who also play Sharks on Sunday, March 15, 2026, will fancy the prospects of catching up with the inconsistent team.

In yet another clash, the Leopards opted for a changed team alteration, and a lethargic display in front of goal came to haunt the team en route to the defeat

The hosts thought they had taken the lead with the final move of the first half when John Makwatta thought he had scored against his former employers, but was flagged for offside.

After the restart, the title-chasing team hit the front from Omune’s goal, as the game took a dramatic turn from then.

Ouru’s brace

Omune’s goal prompted a new spirit from the mid-table team, who responded instantly with Ouru at the end of Paul Kinyanjui’s cross to level matters.

They soon went 2-1 up with Ouru bagging his double in an emphatic fashion as Leopards imploded yet again.

The game was ultimately put to bed with three minutes left after Omweri added the third. There was still time left for Omondi to further add to Ingwe’s woes with a fourth goal, in an almost exact replica of Ingwe’s dominant 5-1 win over Shabana in their previous league outing.

Ingwe mounted a late fightback, trying to pinch a point at the end, but a wasteful show continued.
