AFC Leopards chairman: Mashemeji Derby win was our season turning point

AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani has emphasised the significance of their 98th Mashemeji Derby victory over arch-rivals Gor Mahia, describing it as critical to the chase for the FKF Premier League title.

Leopards ended their dismal record against the former FKF PL champions with a crucial 1-0 win over Gor Mahia at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

The lone goal was supplied by Julius Masaba in the 26th minute, following a well-executed team move.

Speaking to a local TV station on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Ambani admitted the victory had instilled a new sense of belief that the team has maintained as they emerge among the leading contenders for the title this season.

AFC Leopards are currently ranked just below leaders, Gor Mahia, after 17 games, with the league’s second half about to kick off.

Mashujaa victory

“The derby is a huge game that comes with its own stakes and excitement. We won it and now reserve the bragging rights as AFC Leopards,” he stated.

“Indeed strengthened our overall bid for the title. I consider Gor Mahia a contender for the league alongside Police, who won it last season. It was our turning point for our players and fans to believe that this season we can achieve something bigger,” he stated.

Besides the Mashemeji Derby cruise, Ambani has also termed the wins against league rivals such as Shabana and positive results against Police as testament to the team’s improving curve and intent.

“We won against Shabana, drew with Police, and if you can get points from them, it is very important,” he opined.

Elusive title

Ambani has, however, admitted to the huge task ahead of the club in chasing the elusive title. He reckoned that fans’ support—which he admits has been top-notch—will be critical in deciding if Ingwe ultimately carries the league honours this term.

“Our fans have been superb. I want them to continue with that support for the team. They have played their part as the 12th man and now believe the club is headed for something. I want them to continue keeping hope,” he added.

Leopards, who last won the league in 1998, take their quest to build on their consistency to Sofapaka on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Nyayo National Stadium.
