Sections of Thika Road to be closed ahead of CHAN final
By Steve Ireri, August 29, 2025Thika Road and other key Nairobi routes are set to experience major traffic disruptions as the city prepares to host the CHAN 2024 Final on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) issued an advisory on Friday, August 29, 2025, warning that temporary road closures and diversions would start at 6:00 am to manage the expected influx of fans for the Madagascar vs. Morocco match.
The event is projected to draw around 48,000 attendees.
The advisory indicated that the Thika Superhighway will see partial closures with diversions from Nairobi CBD to Ruiru, Juja, or Thika via Kiambu Road at Exit 4, where a roadblock will be stationed at Muthaiga.
“Due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the National Police Service wishes to inform the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi. Motorists travelling along the Thika Superhighway, particularly the Nairobi CBD–Thika Road route via Ruiru, Juja, and Thika, are advised to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, as there will be a roadblock at Muthaiga,” the FKF advisory read in part.
Fans heading to Mwiki are advised to use the Ruaka-Baba Dogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River-Mwiki route, while traffic from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru to Nairobi CBD will be redirected via the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road.
A roadblock will be placed at the Ruiru interchange, adding to the congestion along the route.
“Thika Superhighway heading to Mwiki, use Ruaka–Baba Dogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki. Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to Nairobi CBD, use Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road: there will be a roadblock at Ruiru interchange.”

Motorists travelling from Githurai to Nairobi CBD have been advised to take the alternative Githurai 44 to Kiambu Road route to avoid delays.
Meanwhile, those heading to Kasarani Stadium on foot have been directed to use the service lanes at exits 7 and 4 for safe access.
FKF also noted that additional police officers will be deployed, with authorities warning of strict enforcement against violations.
“The National Police Service continues to work collaboratively with relevant agencies and urges all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules.”
Fan zones
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya identified five fan zones, Lakisama, Kenya Archives, Kibra, Githurai, and Jacaranda, where supporters can watch the match on big screens.
In a presser issued on Friday, August 29, 2025, Mvurya revealed that they had reduced the number of the fan zones to five ahead of the Saturday, August 30, 2025, matchup between Morocco and Madagascar.
“We have made provision likewise for the fan zones. even though we have reduced from 13 to We will have a fan zone at the Kenya Archives, Kibra DC grounds, Githurai, and Jacaranda,” he said.
Entertainment featuring artistes from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will start at 2:00 pm, followed by the closing ceremony and kickoff.
Ticketed fans have been urged to arrive by 1:30 pm.
