Wanja Nyarari explains why she grabbed the mic at mother figure’s burial service

Social media personality Wanja Nyarari has explained why she grabbed the microphone during the burial of her mother figure, Nancy Wanjiku Wanja, on Friday, January 23, 2026.

Reflecting on the events of the day, Wanja noted that she had to intervene when the programme was interrupted, denying family and friends adequate time to mourn.

“Friday, I grabbed the mic 🎤when my Programme was interrupted noone was in a hurry, apart from the moderator, Rev Gitau, even the Bishop was so relaxed and accompanied us to the gravesite,” Wanja said on Monday, January 26, 2026.

In an earlier statement on her official social media account, the social media personality gave her take on how burial services should be handled, insisting that once the clergy agree to preside over the event, the day is set aside fully for mourning, honour, prayer, and closure.

Burials should not be hurried! A burial day is not an appointment squeezed between errands. It is not a function to be rushed. It is not a programme to be edited to suit people who are in a hurry,” Nyarari stated on Monday, January 25, 2026.

“When a family consults the clergy and agrees on a burial date, that day is set aside fully for mourning, honour, prayer, and closure. That is the understanding. That is the agreement. So when clergy interrupt a mourners’ programme with statements like “people are in a hurry or time is running out”, let it be said plainly: that interruption is harmful.”

Consequences of hurrying

Nyarari broke down the consequences of hurrying grieving families and friends through the burial programme, listing emotional distress to families already drowning in grief, disrespect to the deceased, whose life deserves full honour, disruption of healing, especially for close family members who may have waited all day to speak and unnecessary pressure, as if grief should run on a timetable.

She made it clear that those who are in a hurry should consider skipping burials, adding that those who attend always have the choice of staying behind or leaving whenever they choose to.

“If you are in a hurry, do not attend a burial. A burial has one agenda: to bury and to mourn. Nothing else competes with that,” she added.

Nyarari buried her mother figure in a sombre event on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Lang’ata Cemetery in Nairobi.
