Sharon Otieno murder judgment: Court reveals details of pregnancy dispute with Obado
By Zipporah Ngwatu, July 23, 2026The detailed judgement that has convicted the former Migori County Governor Okoth Obado in the murder of his ex-lover Sharon Otieno has revealed that he begged her several times to abort the baby she was carrying.
Justice Cecilia Githua delivered a detailed judgement on Thursday, July 23, 2026, noting that evidence presented to the court showed Obado had pleaded with Sharon several times to terminate the pregnancy.
The judge noted that in his efforts to persuade the deceased to terminate the pregnancy, he at one point told her that it was getting late for the procedure, highlighting the need for her to act quickly.
Notably, the court noted that Obado is also said to have, on several occasions, begged Sharon to stop posting photos of the hotels they had visited together on social media platforms.
However, Sharon confided to her mother, Melida Auma, that she was pregnant and the ex-governor was responsible and was persuading her to terminate it.
According to her mother’s testimony, Sharon revealed that Obado was offering her Ksh30,000 for the termination procedure.
The court heard that her mother advised against terminating the pregnancy, and she heeded her advice and decided to keep the pregnancy.
According to the evidence adduced in court, what followed was Obado terminating their relationship and stopping picking her calls, prompting the deceased to seek help from a journalist.
In his defence, Obado distanced himself from the murder, citing that he had no reason to kill the ex-lover since he had decided to support her through the pregnancy journey.
“The first accused (Obado) maintained that he had no reason to cause the death of Sharon, which was demonstrated by the fact that even after terminating their relationship, he continued providing and supporting her with the pregnancy,” Judge Githua observed.
However, Judge Githua has rejected Obado’s defence that he did not have any motive to kill Sharon, as his intimate relationship at the home was an open relationship, and members of his family knew, and it was in the public domain.
She has also noted that Obado did not reduce the financial support he was offering the deceased, but he entirely withdrew it.
“My take is that he would not have distanced himself and refused to pick up her calls if he really meant to be responsible and supportive throughout the pregnancy journey,” the judge noted.
