Saturday weather: Rain expected in several areas across the country
By William Muthama, May 16, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in several parts of the country on Saturday, May 16, 2026, with enhanced activity expected over the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley.
In its daily weather forecast issued on Friday night, May 15, 2026, the department said showers and thunderstorms are likely over select areas, while other regions will experience sunny intervals and partly cloudy conditions.
Rain expected in several regions
According to the forecast, showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few to several places across the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin.
Affected counties include Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Narok.
Morning rains are expected in a few places around Mt Elgon and Busia, followed by showers and thunderstorms over several places in the afternoon.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Tharaka Nithi counties, cloudy conditions are expected to break into sunny intervals in the morning before showers develop over a few places in the afternoon.
Nairobi and coastal region
For Nairobi County, partly cloudy conditions are expected at night, with a chance of showers in a few places. Morning hours will see cloudy conditions breaking into sunny intervals, followed by afternoon showers over a few areas.
Temperatures in Nairobi are expected to range between a maximum of 25°C and a minimum of 14°C.

At the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River counties, showers are expected in a few places during the night and morning before conditions improve into sunny intervals later in the day.
“Showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places in the afternoon, while other areas will experience sunny intervals,” the department noted in its forecast.
North Eastern and North Western regions
In Northwestern Kenya (Turkana and Samburu), partly cloudy conditions with sunny intervals are expected throughout the day, though strong winds may affect parts of Turkana.

The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) in parts of North Western, North Eastern, and South Eastern lowlands.
Affected counties include Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Makueni, Kitui, and Taita Taveta.
South Eastern lowlands
In Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado counties, partly cloudy conditions are expected with sunny intervals throughout the day.
