Ruto pledges Ksh5M to Kapsabet School for deaf after fatal septic tank accident
By Nancy Marende, March 12, 2026President William Ruto visited Kapsabet School for the Deaf after a tragic incident in which one student died and at least 10 others were injured when they fell into a septic tank while trying to see his motorcade.
According to reports, the accident happened when several learners rushed to catch a glimpse of the president’s convoy as it passed near the school.
The students climbed onto an old 20-foot septic tank within the school compound.
However, the structure collapsed under their combined weight, causing the learners to fall inside. Emergency responders and school staff quickly moved to rescue the students and rush them to the hospital.
Authorities later confirmed that one student died from injuries sustained in the accident, while several others were hospitalised and are receiving treatment.
During his visit to the institution, Ruto expressed his condolences to the affected students and their families, acknowledging that some of the learners had come out to welcome him when the tragedy occurred.

Speaking on Thursday, March 12, 2026, the head of state assured the school community that the government, together with the county administration and other relevant authorities, would address the situation and support those affected.
Ruto also used the visit to assess the school’s infrastructure and needs, noting that the institution requires additional support to improve facilities for the learners.
The president pledged Ksh5 million to support improvements at the school, saying the funds would help address some of the pressing needs facing the institution.
