Rain, wind, and sun: Kenya Met reveals what to expect across the country on Monday, September 21
By Dan Kauna, September 20, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department has released its daily update, promising a varied mix of weather conditions for Monday, September 21, 2026, ranging from heavy coastal downpours and chilly central mornings to hot, windy stretches in the north.
Enhanced Coast rains, chilly Central
Those living along the Indian Ocean coastline will need to keep wet-weather gear nearby. According to the meteorological forecast, “Enhanced rainfall is expected over the coastal region in Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi counties.”
Daytime highs in these coastal locations will range between 27°C and 28°C, with moderate showers expected in a few places during both morning and afternoon hours.
Over Nairobi and the surrounding Central Highlands, mornings will carry a cold bite. The forecast predicts cloudy, light rains over a few places with sunny intervals for the early hours, followed by sunny periods and occasional light showers in the afternoon.
Nairobi will record a maximum temperature of 22°C and a minimum of 15°C. Further north in Nyandarua County, residents should dress warmly as temperatures drop to a cool minimum of 10°C.
Western and Northern Kenya
Across the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and the Lake Victoria Basin, bright morning skies will gradually change by midday. Areas including Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu are projected to see “sunny intervals, light showers and thunderstorms over a few places” during the afternoon.
Bungoma County will experience moderate showers accompanied by thunder. Daytime temperatures in these western regions will remain warm, ranging from 28°C to 32°C.
Meanwhile, Northern Kenya will experience high temperatures alongside sweeping winds. Turkana is set to hit the nationwide high of 37°C, with Mandera following closely at 35°C. In addition to the heat, strong breezes will sweep across several counties.
The report warns that “strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.”
