Police recover bhang as person of interest flees scene in Machakos

Police officers in Machakos County have seized 49 brooms and seven kilograms of suspected cannabis following a routine patrol in Ekalakala Market.
According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Ekalakala Police Station were on patrol when they spotted a person of interest carrying a large bag within the market area. Upon noticing the officers, the person of interest abandoned the bag and fled the scene.
A search of the abandoned bag led to the recovery of the narcotics, which police believe were intended for distribution.
In addition to the 49 brooms and seven kilograms of suspected cannabis, officers also recovered 25 packets of rolling papers.
The person of interest disappeared into nearby paths, prompting an immediate response from officers. No injuries were reported during the incident.
“A search of the abandoned bag led to the recovery of a significant quantity of narcotic substances, including 49 brooms and seven kilograms of suspected cannabis, as well as twenty-five packets of rolling papers,” NPS said.
Investigations underway
Police say investigations have been launched to trace and apprehend the person of interest, as well as any other individuals who may be linked to the narcotics.
The recovered substances have been secured as exhibits pending further analysis and court proceedings.
In its statement, the National Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, noting that sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations remain key in combating drug trafficking.

“The National Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order and remains vigilant through sustained patrols,” the police noted.
This comes a day after police seized 243 rolls of bhang during a targeted operation in the Mwata area, Kisii South Sub-County.
The drugs were found hidden in a maize plantation, and a red TVS motorcycle suspected of being used in drug trafficking was also recovered. The person of interest fled during the operation and is currently being pursued by police.
