Met forecasts chilly weather in Nairobi as rain and thunderstorms persist in several counties
By William Muthama, June 27, 2026Kenyans should prepare for another chilly day on Saturday, June 27, 2026, as the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts continued cold conditions and rainfall in several parts of the country.
In its daily weather forecast, the department said the outlook remains largely dry across most regions, although showers and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the Rift Valley, western Kenya, northwestern counties and areas east of the Rift Valley.
Rainfall forecast
According to the forecast, counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley will experience showers and thunderstorms in a few places during the night and afternoon. Morning hours are expected to feature sunny intervals, with isolated rainfall later in the day.
“These counties include: KAKAMEGA, VIHIGA, BUSIA, BUNGOMA, KISUMU, KISII, NYAMIRA, MIGORI, SIAYA, HOMABAY,
KERICHO, NANDI, BOMET, NAKURU, ELGEYO MARAKWET, WEST POKOT, BARINGO, UASIN GISHU, TRANS-NZOIA, and NAROK).
Showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places tonight,” Kenya Met stated.

Residents of Nairobi and neighbouring counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley will wake up to cloudy conditions that are expected to clear into sunny intervals before isolated afternoon showers develop in some areas.
Northwestern counties, including Turkana and Samburu, are also expected to receive rainfall, with showers and thunderstorms forecast during the night and afternoon.
Cold conditions persist
The weatherman said intermittent cloudy and cold conditions will continue over parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, as well as sections of the Southeastern Lowlands.
Nairobi is expected to record temperatures of between 14°C and 25°C, with cloudy conditions in the morning giving way to sunny intervals later in the day.

Other highland towns such as Nyeri, Meru and Embu are also expected to experience cool mornings before afternoon showers.
In the Rift Valley, Eldoret is forecast to record temperatures between 10°C and 24°C, while Kericho will experience temperatures ranging from 11°C to 24°C, with both towns likely to receive afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Strong winds expected
The Meteorological Department has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) over parts of the North Eastern, Southeastern Lowlands and Coastal counties.
The strong winds are expected to affect parts of Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo, as well as Makueni, Kitui and the entire coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu and Tana River.
Meanwhile, northern counties such as Garissa, Wajir and Mandera are expected to remain largely sunny throughout the day despite the strong winds.
