Kenya Power lists areas to be affected by blackout on Sunday, May 31

Kenya Power has asked customers to prepare for a blackout in select areas on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

In a press statement posted on its socials on Saturday, May 30, 2026, Kenya Power announced a scheduled power interruption affecting several regions across the country as part of planned maintenance works aimed at improving service reliability and network stability.

The utility firm noted that the exercise will run for several hours depending on the specific locality, urging residents and businesses to plan for the temporary outage.

Nairobi region Kamukunji

In Nairobi, parts of Kamukunji will experience a planned power interruption from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Affected areas include Kirinyaga Road, Kamukunji Police area, Kamukunji Mall, Quickmart OTC, Mathai Supermarket, Racecourse Road, OTC, Namakima and surrounding customers.

Kenya Power said the maintenance is intended to enhance power distribution efficiency in one of the capital’s busiest commercial and transport corridors.

Nairobi was among the regions which encountered power interruption on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Western region Siaya county

A much wider outage will affect several parts of Siaya County between 8.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., with multiple towns, markets, health facilities and agricultural zones listed.

Among the affected areas are Ambira Hospital, Ugunja Town, Sega, Ukwala, Yala, Sigomre, Rangala, Nyilima, Rarieda, Asembo Bay, Madiany, Luanda Kotieno, and surrounding villages and trading centres.

The interruption also extends to key infrastructure points such as water facilities, learning institutions, farms and industrial zones, impacting thousands of residents across the county.

Busia county supply areas

In Busia County, the blackout is scheduled from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. and will affect Mundika, Busia Sugar Factory, Nasewa Industrial Park, Port Victoria, Budalangi, Funyula, Butula, Bumala, Sio Port and neighbouring communities.

The utility firm said the works will also touch irrigation schemes and water supply points, including Harambe Irrigation Scheme and Ruambua Health Centre, in an effort to stabilise distribution networks in the border region.

Kakamega and Bungoma zones

In Western Kenya’s industrial belt, Mumias Sugar Factory in Kakamega County will be affected from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m., alongside surrounding installations and customer connections.

In Bungoma County, Rai Paper Factory and adjacent customers will also experience a similar outage during the same timeframe as engineers carry out maintenance on supply lines serving industrial consumers.

Coast region Kilifi county

Along the Coast, parts of Kilifi County in the Jumbo, Rabai and Kombeni areas will face a scheduled interruption from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Affected locations include Jumbo Factory, Mwele, Salima Gases, Kombeni Girls, Bofu Secondary, Mkapuni Centre, Mwawesa Offices, Changombe, Mikomani, Makobeni, Jimba, Boyani China Quarry and surrounding villages.

The utility firm said the maintenance is aimed at strengthening supply reliability in both residential and industrial zones within the coastal corridor.

Public advisory

The power distributor has urged customers in the affected areas to exercise caution and treat all power lines as live during the maintenance period.

Businesses, hospitals and essential service providers have also been advised to make necessary backup arrangements to minimise disruption during the scheduled outage.

Normal electricity supply is expected to be restored immediately after the maintenance works are completed, depending on progress in each region.
