Kenya Power announces blackout in parts of 2 counties on Monday, January 19

Kenya Power has announced a planned power outage affecting parts of Nyeri and Embu counties on Monday, January 19, 2026, as part of maintenance work aimed at improving electricity supply reliability in the region.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Kenya Power revealed that the maintenance work is expected to cause temporary electricity outages in several regions.
Nyeri county
In Nyeri, the outage will affect Muruguru, Kiamuiru, and Githiru from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Key areas impacted include Muruguru Secondary School, Muruguru Market, SDA Muruguru, Satima Millers, Gikunju Maternity, Mugwathi Hotel, and surrounding customers.

Additional parts of Nyeri, including Ihururu, Njoguni, and Mathari Hospital, will also experience power cuts during the same hours.
Institutions and facilities affected include Kimathi Secondary, Burton, Caritus, Kamwenja Teachers College, Nyeri High School, and adjacent customers.
Embu county
In Embu County, areas affected by the outage include Rukuriri, Kieni Hospital, and Mufu, with power interruptions scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Affected locations cover Makutano Market, Kiaragana Primary, Hon. Karemba, Mary Gorretti Girls, Kathageri Market, Mukuri Market, Kiaganari Girls, Kegonge Boys, Mikundu CF, Kathunguri Market, Njeruri Market, Iriari Market, Kariru Secondary, Gitare Secondary, and adjacent customers.

The utility company stated that planned maintenance exercises are critical for ensuring a reliable electricity supply and minimising unexpected power interruptions.
These activities are carried out to inspect, service, and upgrade electrical infrastructure, which includes transformers, distribution lines, and other essential components of the electricity network.
Customers are encouraged to check the Kenya Power website for detailed schedules and updates on power restoration.
“Good Evening, the following areas will be on a planned power maintenance tomorrow (19.01.2026),” the utility company stated.
