Kenya Power announces a blackout on Sunday, June 28, in 3 counties

By , June 27, 2026

Kenya Power has announced a scheduled electricity interruption on Sunday, June 28, 2026, which will affect several regions across the country. The utility firm confirmed that the temporary shutdown is necessary to allow for standard network maintenance and upgrades.

According to an official update shared by the power distributor, “The listed areas will be under planned power maintenance. The interruption is part of network maintenance.”

Residents and businesses in the affected parts of Kakamega, Bungoma, and Garissa counties are advised to plan ahead to minimise disruptions to their weekend activities.

Affected areas in Western region

In the Western region, parts of Kakamega and Bungoma counties will experience power cuts from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

In Kakamega County, the maintenance work will focus on the Supa Loaf area. Key installations that will be affected include the Kakamega County Offices, Aga Khan Hospital, Golf Hotel, Shell Petrol Station, and the Kakamega Police Station, alongside adjacent customers.

At the same time, parts of Bungoma County under the Palm Estate area will also be in the dark.

The six-hour interruption will affect residents living around Shikoti Mission, Bishop Etemesi, Elukho Village, and Emajembe, as well as neighbouring business setups.

Total blackout in Garissa

Unlike the Western region, where only specific pockets are affected, Garissa County will face an expansive outage covering the entire area. The interruption here is scheduled to start earlier and last longer, running from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This extensive shutdown will impact critical public facilities and essential services throughout the county. Key institutions that will have to adjust their operations include the Garissa Referral Hospital, Garissa Provincial Headquarters, Garissa County Assembly, Garissa University, and the Governor’s Office and Residence.

Kenya Power has expressed regret for the inconveniences these operations might cause to its customers. The company has encouraged affected residents to monitor their official communication channels or interact with their automated chatbot, Nuru, for real-time updates regarding the progress of the repairs.
