Kenya Met warns of enhanced rains, strong winds across several regions on Tuesday, Sep 22
By Dan Kauna, September 21, 2026Kenyans across different regions should prepare for mixed weather conditions on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The latest 24-hour advisory shows that rainy conditions, cold temperatures, and strong winds will affect several counties from 9:00 pm on September 21, 2026 to 9:00 pm on September 22, 2026.
According to the forecast, “Enhanced Rainfall is expected over the western region (Kakamega, Vihiga and Bungoma counties)”.
Residents in these counties, alongside parts of Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, and Baringo, can expect light morning rains followed by afternoon moderate showers and thunderstorms over a few places.
Rain forecast for Western Kenya and Central Highlands
Rainfall is also expected across the Central Highlands and the capital city. In Nairobi, temperatures will range between a maximum of 23°C and a minimum of 14°C, with light showers expected over few places during the afternoon.
Daylight in Nairobi starts with sunrise at 6:23 am and sunset at 6:29 pm. Nyandarua county will record the lowest temperature nationwide, with minimum readings dropping to 09°C.
Other central counties, including Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, and Machakos, will experience morning light rains followed by cloudy afternoon skies or sunny intervals with light showers.
Recent observations recorded by the department show that rainfall in the preceding 24-hour period reached up to 55mm in Lamu and 30mm in Garissa.
High temperatures and strong gusty winds in Northern and Coastal counties
While central and western regions experience wet conditions, northern and coastal areas will face high temperatures alongside strong wind speeds. Turkana will record the highest maximum temperature at 36°C, followed by Mandera at 35°C, Wajir at 32°C, and Garissa at 29°C.
The official advisory notes that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties”.
Along the coast, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu will see maximum temperatures between 27°C and 29°C. Sunrise in Mombasa is set for 6:12 am, with sunset at 6:18 pm.
These coastal counties will experience morning light showers before giving way to afternoon sunny intervals, though Lamu may see light showers over several places during the afternoon.
