A section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass will be temporarily closed to pave the way for the 2026 Nairobi Marathon, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.

The closure, which affects the stretch between the Ole Sereni Interchange and the Lang’ata Road Interchange, is set for Sunday, May 10, 2026, and is intended to ensure the safety of thousands of participants and spectators expected at the high-profile athletic event.

According to the official public notice shared on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the restriction will be strictly enforced during the morning and early afternoon hours to facilitate a seamless race experience for the city.

The suspension of vehicular traffic is scheduled to begin at 6:00 am and will remain in effect until 1:00 pm.

In the communication signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA emphasised that the seven-hour window is necessary to provide a secure environment for athletes.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their travels early to avoid being caught in the anticipated snarl-ups around these primary junctions.

Alternative routes and traffic management

To mitigate the impact on city transit, KeNHA has issued guidance for drivers needing to access Lang’ata Road and its environs.

Motorists are advised to utilise the Mombasa Road (A8) Highway from the Ole Sereni Interchange as their primary alternative.

From this point, drivers should proceed toward the Nyayo National Stadium Roundabout to reconnect with Lang’ata Road.

Police officers and traffic marshals will be present at key diversion points. Road users are urged to cooperate fully with these officials and follow the temporary signage.
