KAA issues update as aviation workers’ strike disrupts JKIA flights

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said on Monday, August 31, that the disruption was still affecting operations at the airport, with some passengers facing delays and cancellations.
“KAA wishes to advise passengers and other airport users that the ongoing disruption to air traffic control services continues to affect flight operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA),” the authority said.
KAA’s advice to passengers
KAA urged passengers scheduled to travel through JKIA to confirm the status of their flights with their respective airlines before travelling to the airport.
“As a result, some flights are experiencing delays and cancellations,” KAA said.
“Passengers are therefore strongly advised to contact their respective airlines and confirm the status of their flights in advance before travelling to the airport.”
The advisory means passengers should check directly with their airlines for the latest information before setting off for JKIA, particularly those travelling on Monday.
KAA working with airlines
KAA said it was working with airlines and other aviation stakeholders to minimise the impact of the disruption on passengers.
“KAA continues to work closely with airlines and other aviation stakeholders to mitigate the operational impact of the disruption and to facilitate the safe, secure and orderly operation of the airport,” the authority said.
The authority added that the safety and security of passengers, airport users and the wider aviation community remained its priority.
“The safety and security of passengers, airport users and the wider aviation community remain our highest priority,” KAA said.
KAA on the disruption
The airport operator apologised to passengers and other airport users affected by the disruption.
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and thank all passengers and airport users for their patience, understanding and cooperation during this period,” KAA said.
Passengers have been advised to remain in contact with their airlines for updates on delays, cancellations and any changes to their travel arrangements as the industrial action continues.
Aviation workers’ strike
The aviation workers’ industrial action entered its second day on Monday, with the disruption affecting thousands of travellers at JKIA. Passengers had faced prolonged delays and cancellations as negotiations between the workers’ union and government officials continued.
Passengers travelling through JKIA have consequently been advised to remain in contact with their respective airlines and confirm their flight status before making their way to the airport.
