By Paulette Mboga, March 17, 2026Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi has said he will table a motion in Parliament to allow MPs to speak Kikuyu for two hours every week.
In a video circulating on social media on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, he explained that the proposal aims to give room for the use of mother tongue in the National Assembly.
He said the proposal will be formally presented in Parliament for consideration. He explained that the time set aside will allow MPs to express themselves in Kikuyu. He added that this will help people feel better represented.

George Koimburi said, “Na mimi nitahakikisha, nimeleta mswada bungeni.”
He said the plan is to have a fixed time every week for this purpose. He explained that the two hours will allow proper communication in the language. He added that it will also show that Kikuyu speakers are well represented.
The MP said, “Tupewe masaa mawili kila wiki ndio tuweze kuongea lugha yetu ya wakikuyu, ndio watu wajue wakikuyu wamewakilishwa vizuri pale bungeni.”
MP says Kikuyu language deserves recognition in parliament
Koimburi said the proposal is also about respect and recognition. He explained that Kikuyu speakers should feel valued within the country. He added that language plays a key role in identity and representation.
Koimburi explained, “Na wakikuyu ni watu ambao wanafaa waheshimike katika jamhuri ya Kenya.”

He said the use of mother tongue in Parliament should not be seen as a problem. He explained that Kikuyu is widely spoken and understood by many people.
Koimburi said, “Kwa hivyo sisi tunaomba serikali yetu taifa hii mswada ya kuongea lugha ya mama, lugha ya wakikuyu ni lugha ambayo iko na watu wengi.”
He said other communities are also familiar with the language. He explained that this makes it easier for communication even beyond Kikuyu speakers. He added that allowing its use in Parliament should not raise concerns.
Hata makabila wengine wanajua hii lugha ya wakikuyu. Kwa hivyo si vibaya kuongea lugha ya wakikuyu hata tukikua ndani ya bunge.”
