Form three student takes his own life in Vihiga County
By Enock Amukhale, February 17, 2026A family in Ematioli village, Luanda sub-county, in Vihiga County, is in shock after a form three student took his own life in mysterious circumstances.
Edward Opati, a form three student at Ebulonga Secondary School, took his own life at his father’s house, something that has left his parents puzzled.
The deceased’s body was discovered on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, by the deceased’s parents while dangling on the rafters of their house.
The deceased, a day scholar at Ebulonga Senior Secondary school, had not reported to school on Monday as usual.
The deceased’s mother, Pamela Opati, while reacting to the incident, said her son was well throughout before the death struck. She said his son has not shown any signs of depression, and she is still not convinced what prompted his son to take his life.
Pamela said she only questioned his son about why he had not reported to school on Monday as usual.
He said the son only told her he failed to wash his uniform, which is why he failed to go to school.
” We had no problem with my son Edward Opati, alias Mayor. I only asked him why he had not reported to school on Monday. He told me that he forgot to wash his school uniform. After that I left and we went to Luanda for my usual business,” lamented the grief-stricken mother.
Pamela says after returning from Luanda, she came back home and found his son very well and composed.
In a few minutes, Pamela said he was informed that his son had hanged himself in his room.
One of my daughters came running in panic and told us that Mayor has hanged himself. His father moved with speed, broke into his house and found the body dangling from the rafters of the house, dead,” said the grieving mother.
Police from the Luanda police station arrived at the scene and took the body to the Coptic Mortuary.
The police also discovered a suicide note from the deceased.
Luanda sub-county OCPD Richard Siele said they suspect the young man took his own life due to depression.
Siele said officers from the criminal investigation unit have taken over the case, and they have commenced with investigations.
” We have received report that a Form Three student committed suicide at Ematioli village. Police have taken the body to the mortuary, and we are using the suicide note to help in investigations,” said Siele.
The OCPD also asked parents to listen to their children and help solve problems they are facing.
” I appeal to parents to listen and talk to their children to avoid such incidents,” said Siele.
