Court remands Obado and 2 others pending sentencing in Sharon Otieno murder case
By Zipporah Ngwatu, July 23, 2026The Milimani High Court has ordered the former Migori County governor and two others convicted of the Sharon Otieno murder to be remanded awaiting sentencing.
The court found Okoth Obado, Michael Oyamo, and Caspal Obiero guilty of murder.
Justice Cecilia Githua has, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, ordered the three to remain in custody until August 18, 2026, when the matter will be mentioned virtually.
Judge Githua’s orders come after Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gichui sought to have the three convicts remain in custody awaiting sentencing.
According to Gichuhi, the prosecution needs more time to avail the previous records of the accused and a pre-sentencing report to be tendered in court before they are sentenced.
However, Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi, representing the former county boss, requested the court to extend the convict’s bail terms to the date of sentencing.
Kilukumi argued that his client has been attending court religiously since he was released on bail on October 24, 2018, pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Further, he told the court that Obado’s passport, including the diplomatic passport, is still in the custody of the court; thus, he is not a flight risk.
“My lady, I am urging the court to extend the bail terms for my client (Obado) to the date of sentencing. This court has discretion to extend the bail terms up to the date of sentencing,” SC Kilukumi submitted.
Further, Kilukumi told the court that the conviction reports may take almost 30 days on the presumption they are innocent.
Judge Githua has rejected the application by Senior Counsel Kilukumi and ordered the three to be detained for 21 days.
“Pending the pre-sentence, which should be produced in 21 days, the convicts will be remanded in custody until August 18, 2026,” Judge Githua ordered.
The matter will be mentioned on August 18, 2026, virtually to confirm compliance.
