3 KDF recruits die during endurance drill
By William Muthama, January 30, 2026Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruits tragically died during a scheduled training activity at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
In a statement on X on Friday, January 30, 2026, the KDF revealed that the recruits developed medical complications while participating in a routine endurance exercise.
“Immediate medical assistance was provided on-site, and the affected recruits were evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for advanced care. Despite the efforts of attending medical teams, the recruits were pronounced dead,” the statement read.
Support for families
The KDF highlighted that the next of kin have been formally notified, and the military is providing all necessary support to the bereaved families.
The forces conveyed their deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, fellow recruits, and colleagues of the deceased.

“We are providing all necessary support and assistance to the families of the deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, fellow recruits, and colleagues during this difficult time,” KDF added.
Investigation launched
The forces added that a thorough investigation has been launched in line with military procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The forces emphasised their dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism. “The Kenya Defence Forces remains committed to ensuring the well-being of all its personnel and upholding safety during training exercises,” KDF noted.
In 2024, Kirinyaga County was left in shock after their kin collapsed and later died during a military recruitment exercise at the General Kassan stadium.
While confirming the incident, Kirinyaga East sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Millicent Ochuka mentioned that the deceased, Francis Wachira, 25, had enrolled for the exercise and was seeking to be recruited in the Kenya Defence Force (KDF).
