27 injured in grisly early-morning Salama accident along Nairobi-Mombasa Road

The pile-up involved a truck, a passenger bus, two private cars, and a motorcycle, bringing traffic along the highway to a halt. The accident occurred near the Salama trading centre.
Quick rescue response
Emergency teams consisting of the Kenya Red Cross, working alongside county emergency services and the National Police Service, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash to coordinate rescue efforts.
In an update shared on X, the humanitarian group confirmed the details of the evacuation.

“27 critically injured casualties were evacuated to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital following a major road traffic incident involving a truck, a bus, two private vehicles and a motorcycle at Salama on the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway last night,” the Kenya Red Cross stated, adding, “Kenya Red Cross supported emergency response efforts alongside county emergency services, the National Police Service and other partners.”
The 27 casualties suffered critical injuries and needed immediate attention from doctors. Paramedics stabilised the casualties before ambulances transferred them to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital.
Traffic snarl-up and safety
The accident caused a massive traffic jam, leaving many commuters stranded on the road.
Police officers at the scene spent hours controlling the crowd and directing vehicles to clear the road.
The Salama stretch is known for heavy traffic involving fast passenger buses and long-distance cargo trucks. Authorities continue to urge drivers to stick to speed limits, especially at night, to keep everyone safe on the road.
