MP raises concerns over surge in Turkana insecurity cases

Turkana South Member of Parliament (MP) Ariko Namoit has sounded the alarm over what he termed a disturbing surge in insecurity cases across Turkana County.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, when seeking a statement from the National Assembly Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, he called for urgent government intervention.

“Citing Standing Order 44(2)(c), Namoit raised concern over a series of escalating security threats that have gone largely unchecked, sparking alarm among local leaders and residents alike,” read a statement by the National Assembly.

In his submission to the House, the MP detailed multiple instances of insecurity, including the abduction of Sammy Ekitela, his constituency manager, and the assault of three other staff members on April 29, 2024, by criminal elements.

He also cited a violent clash in Lorogon on 10th August 2024, involving his supporters and those aligned with the Governor, and the forceful seizure of a firearm from a member of his security detail on June 28, 2025, in Lopiding, during the burial ceremony of the late Hon. Lomuria Philip Ekuwam, the Deputy Speaker of the Turkana County Assembly.

The latter case, he noted, was reported to Lokichogio Police Station but remains unresolved.

Namoit further decried the mounting of alleged illegal roadblocks in Lodwar Town by unauthorised groups masquerading as security personnel.

“These acts of aggression and disregard for law and order are deeply concerning. The failure to act has emboldened certain groups to assume the roles of security agencies, undermining the rule of law and threatening peace in the region.”

Demands

He called for answers on the progress of investigations into the Lopiding firearm snatching and the alleged roadblocks in Lodwar, as well as clarity on what measures the Ministry of Interior is taking to curb the involvement of hired groups in disrupting public gatherings.

The Turkana South legislator warned that the deteriorating security environment could deepen political tensions if left unaddressed. He urged the government to act swiftly to restore public confidence in state institutions and protect the constitutional rights of residents.
