Speaking on this, Melina Jampolis, a physician nutrition specialist, told CNN that “some people are naturally thin because they have a higher metabolic rate and burn more calories at rest than others.”
Ectomorphs are typically lean and find it difficult to gain weight because their bodies burn energy quickly. Endomorphs, on the other hand, are more likely to store fat due to a slower metabolism.
This means two people can eat the same foods, but their bodies respond differently.
Metabolism plays a central role
Metabolism is how the body converts food into energy. Some people naturally burn calories faster than others.
According to Michael Jensen, an endocrinologist at Mayo Clinic:
“Differences in metabolism can affect how many calories a person burns, even when they are at rest.”
This explains why one person may remain slim while another gains weight from the same diet.
Muscle mass increases calorie burning
Experts also point to muscle mass as an important factor.
“Muscle burns more calories than fat, even when the body is at rest,” nutritionist Jampolis notes.
So, someone with more lean muscle will naturally use more energy throughout the day, making it harder for excess calories to turn into fat.
Daily habits still matter
Even though someone may appear to eat anything, their overall habits may tell a different story.
“Total daily calorie intake and activity levels matter more than any single food choice,” Jampolis added.
A person may snack on sugary foods but still eat less overall, move more during the day, or have a lifestyle that balances out their intake.
Genetics and hormones influence weight
Another key factor is genetics.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), “Genetic factors can influence body weight by affecting metabolism, fat storage, and appetite.”
Hormones also affect how the body stores fat and uses energy, which explains why people experience weight differently.
Slim does not always mean healthy
Experts are clear that being slim does not automatically mean being healthy.
A person may remain thin while still consuming excess sugar and unhealthy fats, which can affect internal health over time.
The reason some people stay slim despite eating sugar and fatty foods comes down to a mix of body type, metabolism, muscle mass, daily habits, and genetics.
