Kenya flight disruptions: How travellers can avoid getting stranded at JKIA

By , August 30, 2026

Flight disruptions can quickly turn a carefully planned journey into hours of waiting at the airport. For travellers using Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), recent delays have once again highlighted the need to check travel plans before leaving home.

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, flight operations at JKIA and other airports were disrupted following a go-slow involving staff from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). Several flights remained on the ground for hours, leaving passengers waiting for updates.

According to Kenya Airways, flights departing JKIA were experiencing 2-3 hour delays.

Check your flight before leaving home

One of the most important habits for any traveller is checking the status of their flight shortly before heading to the airport. A passenger may leave home expecting a flight to depart at the scheduled time, only to arrive and find that the departure has been pushed back or the schedule changed.

Travellers should therefore check their airline’s official website, mobile application, text messages or other official communication channels before setting off. If there is a major disruption, airlines may provide instructions on whether passengers should proceed to the airport or wait for further communication.

During previous disruptions, airlines have advised passengers to confirm their flight status before travelling to JKIA.

Give yourself extra time

Arriving at the airport early remains important, especially when there are signs of delays or operational problems. Travellers should allow additional time for traffic, security checks, queues at check-in counters and possible changes in the movement of passengers within the airport.

This is particularly useful for passengers travelling internationally, who may have to complete check-in, security and immigration procedures before reaching their gates.

Getting to JKIA early also gives travellers more time to seek assistance if their flight is delayed or cancelled.

Keep your airline’s contacts close

When a flight is disrupted, the airline is usually the first place a passenger should turn to for information about rebooking, cancellations, baggage and check-in.

Instead of relying only on information circulating on social media, travellers should use the contact details provided on their booking confirmation or the airline’s official communication channels.

Passengers should also keep their booking reference, passport details and ticket information easily accessible. Having these details ready can make it easier to communicate with airline staff when large numbers of passengers are seeking assistance.

Avoid making separate travel arrangements too early

A delayed flight can create a chain of problems, particularly for travellers who have booked connecting flights, hotel rooms, airport transfers or other activities separately.

Where possible, travellers should avoid rushing to make new bookings before receiving confirmation from their airline. A flight that appears significantly delayed may still operate later, while a cancellation could lead to rebooking options.

For passengers with connecting flights, it is also important to inform the airline if a delay puts the next part of the journey at risk.

Keep essentials in your hand luggage

When travelling during a period of possible disruption, it helps to keep important items in hand luggage rather than checked baggage.

Travel documents, medication, a phone charger, some drinking water and basic personal items can become especially useful if passengers have to wait for several hours.

A fully charged phone is equally important because airlines may send updates electronically, while passengers may need to make calls or access booking information.

Stay informed and remain flexible

Flight disruptions cannot always be avoided, but being prepared can make them easier to manage.

Travellers heading through JKIA should monitor their airline’s updates, confirm their flight status before leaving home, and allow extra time for the journey. If a disruption occurs, following official instructions rather than relying on rumours can help passengers make better decisions.
