WhatsApp rolls out in-car calling, iPad sign-ups and other new features

WhatsApp has announced a range of new features designed to make it easier for users to stay connected across multiple devices and apps, including in-car calling, direct iPad account registration, PDF editing and music sharing on Status.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Meta-owned messaging platform said the updates are aimed at ensuring users can access WhatsApp wherever they are, whether at home, on the road or at work.
“WhatsApp should work wherever you do. Your most important conversations don’t just live on your phone anymore,” WhatsApp said in a statement.
“You are catching up with friends from the couch on your iPad, checking in with family on the drive home, and switching between many different apps to manage your work and day.”
According to the platform, users are increasingly switching between devices throughout the day, prompting the company to improve how WhatsApp integrates with other apps and services.
Here are some of the new features updated on WhatsApp.
Direct WhatsApp sign-ups on iPad
One of the biggest updates allows users to create and register a WhatsApp account directly on an iPad without first linking it to a smartphone.
Since launching WhatsApp for iPad last year, the company said one of the most requested features has been the ability to sign up directly from the tablet.
Users can now verify their phone number, create an account and start using WhatsApp entirely from the iPad app.
In-car calling and messaging
WhatsApp has also revamped its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto experience, allowing users to stay connected while driving.
The update enables drivers to hear and reply to messages, make WhatsApp calls, view call history and quickly access favourite contacts, all hands-free through their vehicle’s infotainment screen.
The company said the improvements are intended to make communication safer and more convenient while on the road.
PDFs can now be edited
For desktop and web users, WhatsApp now supports opening PDF files directly within chats without downloading them first.
Users can also make basic edits, including highlighting and annotating documents, thanks to integration with Adobe Acrobat.
Share music on WhatsApp Status
Music lovers will also benefit from a new Status feature that lets users share songs directly from Spotify or Apple Music.
With just a few taps, users can post an audio preview of the track they are listening to, allowing friends and contacts to discover their favourite music through WhatsApp Status.
According to WhatsApp, the feature offers another way for users to express themselves and personalise their updates.
The company said the new features are already rolling out globally and will become available to users over the coming weeks.
“These features are already rolling out now. We hope they make it easier than ever to keep up with your life,” WhatsApp said.
