How Kenyans can now download birth certificates online through e-Citizen

Kenya is steadily expanding its digital government services, with one of the most significant updates being the ability for citizens to access and print birth certificates online through the e-Citizen platform.

The service is part of a wider transformation aimed at reducing paperwork, cutting delays, and improving access to essential documents for all Kenyans, regardless of location.

The move is seen as a continuation of ongoing reforms within public administration, where technology is being used to simplify processes that previously required physical visits to government offices and long waiting periods.

How the online birth certificate service works

Through the government’s digital services portal, users can now apply for, download, and print certified copies of birth certificates without physically visiting registration offices. The system is designed to be accessible using a mobile phone or computer with internet access.

To use the service, applicants are required to log into the e-Citizen platform, search for civil registration services, and follow the guided application process. Once verification is completed, the document becomes available for download and printing.

The platform is linked to civil registration records, allowing for faster processing and improved accuracy in document retrieval.

Improved efficiency and reduced bureaucracy

Officials say the digitisation process is aimed at eliminating long queues and repeated visits to government offices, which have historically slowed down access to essential documents. The system also helps reduce paperwork and human handling, which improves efficiency and transparency.

According to the Interior and National Administration leadership, the reforms are part of a broader plan to modernise service delivery and make government services more responsive to citizens’ needs.

The government official’s statement

In a statement released on Monday, June 22, 2026, after a strategic consultative meeting with the leadership of the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, led by Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang, together with Heads of Directorates at Nyayo House in Nairobi, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, highlighted the importance of digital transformation in improving public service delivery.

“The expansion of digital services is intended to ensure that citizens can access essential documents quickly and conveniently, without unnecessary delays or physical visits to government offices,” the statement noted.

Officials further emphasized that the reforms are driven by feedback from citizens and ongoing efforts to improve efficiency in service delivery.

Support for Kenyans abroad

Beyond local access, the government is also strengthening consular services to support Kenyans living and working abroad. The initiative aims to ensure that diaspora communities can access key government services through Kenyan diplomatic missions more efficiently.

This includes faster documentation support and improved communication channels between citizens abroad and government offices in Kenya.

A step toward full digital governance

The rollout of online birth certificate services reflects a wider government ambition to digitise more public services. Authorities have indicated that the focus is on improving accessibility, responsiveness, and convenience through platforms like e-Citizen.

As digital adoption grows, more services are expected to move online, further reducing reliance on manual processes and improving the overall citizen experience.
