What women often misunderstand about male friendships
By Cynthia Lodite, July 23, 2026Every friendship is unique, and not all men or women relate to friends in the same way. Some men are highly expressive, while some women prefer activity-based friendships. The important lesson is to avoid judging another person’s friendships solely through your own experiences.
Recognising that people express care, loyalty, and connection differently can reduce misunderstandings and strengthen relationships.
Healthy friendships and healthy romantic relationships are not rivals; they can complement each other, helping people lead happier, more connected lives.
Friendships play an important role in everyone’s life, but they do not always look the same. While every person is different, many male friendships operate differently from female friendships in the way they communicate, show support, and spend time together.
Understanding these differences does not mean one style of friendship is better than another. It simply highlights that people often connect and express care in different ways.
Men do not always need long conversations to feel close
Many women strengthen friendships by regularly talking about personal experiences and emotions. While some men do this as well, many build closeness through shared activities rather than lengthy conversations.
Watching football together, working on a project, going for a road trip, or simply spending time together can reinforce friendship without discussing deeply personal topics.

Silence does not always mean distance
Two male friends can spend hours together with very little conversation and still enjoy each other’s company. Sitting quietly, driving together, or watching a game may be enough for them to feel connected.
What may appear distant to someone else can actually be a comfortable form of companionship.
Teasing can be a sign of affection
Playful jokes, harmless teasing, and light-hearted banter are common in many male friendships. To outsiders, these exchanges may seem rude or insensitive, but they are often expressions of trust and familiarity.
However, healthy teasing should never cross the line into bullying, humiliation, or disrespect.
They may not talk every day
Unlike some friendships that involve daily phone calls or constant texting, many male friends can go weeks or even months without regular communication and still pick up where they left off.
Their friendship is often measured by trust and reliability rather than the frequency of contact.

Friends can be an important support system
There is a common assumption that a romantic partner should meet every emotional need. In reality, healthy friendships provide additional support that benefits both individuals and relationships.
Having trusted friends gives men people to celebrate achievements with, seek advice from, and lean on during difficult times.
Male friendships can improve romantic relationships
Strong friendships often encourage accountability, emotional resilience, and personal growth. Friends can offer honest advice, celebrate milestones, and provide perspective during life’s challenges.
When friendships are healthy and respectful, they can make someone a more balanced partner rather than competing with the relationship.
Loyalty matters deeply
Many men place a high value on loyalty and reliability in friendships. A friend who shows up during difficult times is often remembered for years.
This sense of loyalty is one reason long-term friendships can remain meaningful even when life becomes busy with careers or family responsibilities.
