Onions are a kitchen staple found in many households, but storing them incorrectly can cause them to spoil much sooner than expected.

Whether you buy them in bulk or use them occasionally, knowing the right storage methods can help keep onions fresh and flavourful and reduce food waste.

Every kitchen in Kenya relies on onions as an essential ingredient, yet throwing away sprouted, soft, or rot-damaged bulbs remains a frequent frustration.

Maintaining their quality for up to three months comes down to basic environmental management in your pantry or kitchen space

Store whole onions in a cool, dry place

Whole onions last longest when kept in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. A pantry, cupboard, or storage basket away from direct sunlight is usually ideal. Good airflow helps prevent moisture from building up, which can encourage mould and rot.

Avoid storing onions in airtight containers or sealed plastic bags, as these trap moisture and reduce air circulation, causing onions to spoil more quickly.

Keep them away from potatoes

Although onions and potatoes are often stored together, it’s best to keep them separate. Potatoes release moisture and gases as they age, which can speed up the spoilage of onions. Likewise, onions can affect the quality of potatoes.

Store each in its own well-ventilated container or basket.

Use mesh bags or baskets

If your onions came in a mesh bag, you can keep them in it. Otherwise, wire baskets, woven baskets, or perforated containers are good alternatives because they allow air to circulate freely around the onions.

Avoid stacking too many onions on top of one another, as damaged onions can affect those around them.

Refrigerate only after cutting

Whole onions generally do not need refrigeration. In fact, the cool, humid environment inside a refrigerator can make them soften or become mouldy over time.

However, once an onion has been peeled or cut, it should be placed in a sealed container or wrapped tightly and stored in the refrigerator. Use it within about seven days for the best quality and safety.

Keep onions dry

Moisture is one of the biggest enemies of fresh onions. If onions become wet, dry them thoroughly before storing them. Never wash whole onions before putting them away, as excess moisture can encourage mold growth.
