How to download KCPE and KCSE certificates online via new KNEC portal

By , June 27, 2026

Replacing a lost or damaged national exam certificate in Kenya has historically meant long queues, costly trips to Nairobi, and weeks of waiting. That stressful experience is fading away as educational services move into the digital space.

Former candidates can now retrieve and download their official academic certificates from any device with internet access.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has rolled out an online e-Certificate platform to simplify access to academic records.

The platform allows millions of Kenyans who sat their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations to get digital copies of their documents.

Eligible years and the verification process

The portal hosts national examination records stretching from 1989 to 2025.

This shift to digital storage directly addresses the risks and frustrations tied to physical papers.

According to the council’s official platform overview, the system operates as “a unified platform empowering candidates with ownership of their achievements while providing employers with absolute trust in academic credentials by instant verification of tamper-proof e-certificates.”

Getting a digital copy involves a few steps.

Former candidates must first register on the official KNEC portal using a valid email address. After creating an account, the applicant goes through an identity verification stage.

This step matches personal details, including national identification and exam index numbers, with the council database to prevent unauthorised access.

Payment charges and downloading PDF copies

Once the portal confirms the identity of the applicant, the user moves to the payment section. The service attracts a certificate fee of Ksh1,200.

This amount is subject to standard Value Added Tax (VAT) and the mandatory eCitizen convenience fee. All payments are securely processed online using mobile money services or bank cards.

After successful payment, the platform generates the official certificate in a downloadable PDF format. The digital document features unique security elements to prevent forgery, allowing employers and universities to confirm authenticity instantly.

These files remain available on the portal dashboard for six months, giving candidates enough time to save and print their verified academic history.
