For many Kenyans, the day starts long before reaching the office, especially if you work in the capital, Nairobi.

You may have to wake up early, prepare for work, walk to the stage, squeeze into a matatu or bus and then spend hours dealing with traffic. By the time you arrive at work, you may already feel tired.

While you cannot always control traffic or how crowded public transport gets, a few small habits can make your morning commute easier.

1. Leave home a little earlier

Leaving home a few minutes earlier can give you more breathing room.

Instead of rushing to catch the next matatu or worrying about being late, you have more time to deal with unexpected delays.

You may also avoid some of the worst traffic depending on your route and time of travel.

2. Prepare the night before

A stressful morning can make your commute feel worse.

Pack your bag, choose your clothes and prepare anything you will need before going to bed. If you carry breakfast or lunch to work, prepare as much as possible in advance.

This can help you leave home without rushing and reduce the chances of forgetting important items.

3. Carry something to keep you comfortable

A long commute can be uncomfortable, especially when you are stuck in traffic or standing in a crowded vehicle.

Carry water and, if necessary, a light snack. If you spend a lot of time outdoors while waiting for transport, an umbrella can also come in handy during unpredictable weather.

Small things can make a big difference when you spend a lot of time on the road.

4. Be careful with your phone

Your phone can make a long journey feel shorter, but constantly checking it can also leave you feeling more tired.

Instead of spending the entire commute scrolling through social media, you could listen to music, a podcast or an audiobook.

If you are walking or using public transport, also stay aware of your surroundings and keep your phone secure.

5. Give yourself a few quiet minutes

A morning commute does not have to be filled with messages, calls and social media.

If possible, use part of the journey to simply relax. Take a few deep breaths, listen to something calming or think about what you want to accomplish that day.

You may not be able to change the traffic, the crowded matatu or the long queue at the stage, but you can make the journey a little easier on yourself.

A better commute does not always require more money. Sometimes, simple preparation and a calmer approach can make the start of your day much easier.
