Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) have successfully removed a massive 4kg liver tumour during a complex seven-hour right hepatectomy, giving a patient a new lease of life in a procedure described as both delicate and life-saving.

The landmark surgery was the highlight of a Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgical camp held at KNH from June 10 to 12, 2026.

The camp brought together local and international specialists in a bid to strengthen advanced surgical care and expand capacity in managing complex liver, pancreatic, and biliary conditions.

According to the statement issued on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the life-changing operation was carried out through collaboration between KNH, the Europe-Africa Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the University of Nairobi, Aga Khan University, and visiting surgeons from the University of Science and Technology Hospital in Egypt.

Other major achievements

Beyond the landmark surgery, the three-day camp delivered 13 highly specialised HPB procedures, including four liver resections, one Whipple’s procedure, two hepaticojejunostomies, and six laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

“The three-day camp also delivered 13 highly specialised HPB procedures, including four liver resections, one Whipple’s procedure, two hepaticojejunostomies, and six laparoscopic cholecystectomies,” the KNH statement reads.

The achievements underscores KNH’s growing capacity to deliver advanced specialised care locally, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad and reinforcing its role as a national referral hospital capable of handling highly complex medical cases.

According to KNH, the milestone reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to delivering world-class specialised care and strengthening surgical capacity through international collaboration and skills transfer programmes.
