5 simple ways to make your workouts more fun
By Ascah Mwango, August 14, 2026Exercise is good for you, but let us be honest, sometimes it can feel like a punishment you volunteered for. You put on your workout clothes, convince yourself that today will be different, then spend the next 40 minutes staring at the clock and wondering why five minutes suddenly feels like an hour.
The good news is that working out does not have to be boring. You do not have to force yourself through the same treadmill walk, squats and weights every single day just because you think that is what fitness is supposed to look like. Experts recommend choosing activities you actually enjoy, adding variety and finding ways to make movement social and entertaining because enjoyment can make it easier to stay active consistently.
If your current workout routine feels more like a chore than something you look forward to, a few small changes can make a surprisingly big difference.
Create a workout playlist
Never underestimate the power of a good playlist. The right song can turn a dull workout into something that feels almost like a private concert, except you are the performer, the audience and the person sweating through their clothes.
Put together a playlist with songs that genuinely make you want to move. You can have energetic songs for running or strength training and slower music for stretching, yoga or cooling down. Research has also found that upbeat music can make exercise feel more enjoyable and may encourage people to exercise at a higher intensity.
You can make it even more interesting by creating different playlists for different moods. Have one for days when you feel unstoppable and another for those mornings when getting out of bed already feels like an Olympic event.
If music is not your thing, try a podcast, audiobook or entertaining show while doing a workout that allows you to listen safely. The idea is to give your brain something enjoyable to focus on while your body gets moving.
Stop doing the same workout
Doing the same workout every day can become painfully predictable. Even an exercise you once loved can lose its sparkle when you repeat it endlessly.
Instead, permit yourself to experiment. You could walk on Monday, dance on Tuesday, lift weights on Wednesday, cycle on Thursday and take a long outdoor walk at the weekend. You do not have to become an expert at everything. The point is to keep your body moving while giving yourself something different to look forward to.
The American Heart Association recommends varying activities because a mix of enjoyable exercises can help prevent workouts from becoming boring.
You can also change small things within your usual workout. Try a different route when walking, rearrange your strength exercises or take your workout outside. Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need.
Work out with a friend
Everything feels slightly less painful when you have someone to complain to.
Finding a workout partner can make exercise more social and give you an extra reason to show up. Instead of meeting your friend only for coffee or dinner, suggest going for a walk, joining a fitness class, playing tennis or trying a dance workout together.
The social element can also make time pass faster. A long walk can feel much shorter when you are busy catching up on gossip, work, relationships and everything else happening in your lives. Health organisations also recommend exercising with friends or family because having company can make physical activity more enjoyable and help people stay committed.
The important thing is to choose someone who encourages you rather than turning every workout into an unwanted competition. You are there to get fit, not to discover who can suffer the most.
Turn exercise into a game
If you are someone who gets bored easily, give yourself little challenges. Instead of simply saying, “I am going for a walk,” give yourself something to achieve.
You could challenge yourself to explore a new route, reach a certain number of steps or beat your previous walking time. You could also try an active game such as dancing, basketball, bowling, swimming or even a fitness video game.
Gamifying exercise gives you something to concentrate on besides the fact that your legs are working. The American Heart Association suggests creating mini challenges during physical activity as one way of making movement more enjoyable.
Just remember that the goal is to make exercise more enjoyable, not to turn every workout into a dramatic battle for survival. Small victories count too.
Take your workout outside
There is something about exercising outdoors that can make movement feel less like exercise. Instead of staring at a gym wall, you get fresh air, changing scenery and a little sunshine.
Take your walk to a park, try an outdoor workout, go hiking or simply stretch outside. You can even turn an ordinary walk into an opportunity to explore a new neighbourhood or discover places you normally pass without noticing.
Research and health guidance suggest that pleasant outdoor environments can support enjoyment and make physical activity more appealing.
