5 hygiene habits every woman should practise before and after waxing
By Ascah Mwango, September 17, 2026Waxing can leave your skin feeling smooth, soft and ready for your favourite outfit, but getting there takes more than booking an appointment and hoping for the best. Whether you wax your legs, underarms, bikini area or face, the preparation and aftercare matter just as much as the hair removal itself.
One minute you are excited about silky skin, and the next you are wondering why your underarms have tiny bumps or why your bikini area feels like it has filed a formal complaint. Waxing pulls hair from the root, and the process can temporarily irritate the skin, leaving it more sensitive to friction, sweat and certain products.
Good hygiene helps reduce the risk of irritation and some skin infections, while proper aftercare allows the skin to settle. It is not about having a complicated beauty routine or filling your bathroom with expensive products. Sometimes, the most useful steps involve clean hands, fresh clothes and resisting the temptation to touch everything.
Here are five hygiene habits every woman should practise before and after waxing.
Start with clean skin and hands
Before you sit on the salon bed, make sure your skin is clean. Take a shower and gently wash the area you plan to wax, removing sweat, excess oil, deodorant and other products that may be sitting on the skin.
If you are waxing your underarms, avoid arriving with a thick layer of deodorant. For a bikini wax, clean the external area gently without using harsh soaps or scented products.
Your hands matter too, especially if you wax at home. Wash them thoroughly before touching your skin, and ensure that your tools and surfaces are clean. If you are visiting a salon, pay attention to how the beautician prepares the area and handles waxing equipment.
Waxing should not be a game of sharing germs. Choose salons that use a new wooden applicator each time wax is applied, rather than repeatedly dipping the same stick into the wax.
Prepare your skin without overdoing it
Exfoliation is often recommended as part of a waxing routine because removing dead skin cells may help with ingrown hairs. However, more scrubbing does not automatically mean better results.
If you plan to exfoliate, do it gently and ahead of your appointment rather than vigorously scrubbing the skin immediately before waxing. Gentle exfoliation one to two days before a Brazilian wax may help, but avoid irritating your skin in preparation for the appointment.
Avoid waxing skin that is already irritated, sunburned, cut or damaged. Be particularly careful if you use retinoids or certain acne medications, as some products can increase the risk of skin injury during waxing.
If you use prescription skincare, ask your dermatologist or healthcare provider whether you should pause it and for how long.
Remember, your skin is not a stubborn cooking pot that needs aggressive scrubbing before it cooperates.
Keep your hands off newly waxed skin
After waxing, your skin may feel warm, tender or slightly red. This is common, and the area needs time to settle. One of the simplest hygiene habits is also one of the hardest: stop touching it unnecessarily.
We all know the temptation. You notice a tiny bump, run your fingers over it and suddenly find yourself conducting a full investigation. Unfortunately, picking, scratching or squeezing the skin can introduce bacteria and increase irritation.
If you have waxed your face, wash your hands before applying any recommended skincare products. For the bikini area or underarms, avoid unnecessary rubbing and give the skin a chance to recover.
A clean, cool compress can help soothe irritation. You should also follow the specific aftercare advice provided by your waxing professional, especially if you have sensitive skin.
If bumps develop, do not automatically assume that every one is an infection. Irritation, folliculitis and ingrown hairs can have similar appearances, and persistent or worsening symptoms need proper assessment.
Wear fresh, loose clothing after waxing
Your outfit can make a difference to how comfortable your skin feels after waxing. Tight jeans, restrictive underwear and synthetic fabrics that rub against freshly waxed skin may increase irritation, particularly around the bikini area.
Choose clean, comfortable clothing that allows the skin to breathe and reduces friction. Fresh cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes can be practical choices after a bikini wax.
You should also avoid activities that expose freshly waxed skin to excessive heat, sweat and friction. Avoid hot baths, saunas and tight clothing for 24 to 48 hours after a Brazilian wax.
This is where planning your appointment becomes useful. Waxing just before a long day in tight trousers, a sweaty gym session or a beach outing may not be the most comfortable arrangement.
Give your skin a little breathing room. It has already survived the appointment.
Clean gently and watch for warning signs
After waxing, keep the treated area clean, but do not turn your skincare routine into a military operation. Use gentle products and avoid harsh scrubbing while the skin is sensitive.
For the first day or two, be cautious with fragranced products and strong exfoliating ingredients on the waxed area. If your skin is irritated, allow it to recover before introducing products that might cause further discomfort.
Ingrown hairs can develop when hair grows back into the skin, causing itchy or swollen bumps. Waxing is one of the hair-removal methods that can contribute to this problem. Avoid picking or squeezing the bumps, as doing so can damage the skin and increase the risk of infection.
Pay attention to symptoms that go beyond ordinary, temporary irritation. Seek medical advice if you experience severe pain, increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus or fever. These may indicate a problem that requires treatment rather than another home skincare experiment.
